Harrah’s Entertainment have just appointed an ex-PartyGaming CEO to run their new subsidiary setting up Internet play for the World Series of Poker and online casino gaming in Europe.

The appointment follows months of speculation and rumour among gaming industry insiders. On Friday Harrah’s Entertainment made it official when they announced that they have created an online gambling division called Harrah’s Interactive Entertainment. Mitch Garber is in charge of running the new branch, he is the former head of PartyGaming and his appointment last month led to expectations that Harrah was preparing to start operating online.

In a recent statement, Harrah’s CEO Gary Loveman said that, “As the world’s largest gaming company, Harrah’s is taking a proactive approach toward international and interactive expansion.” He went onto say that, “It is important we position ourselves to explore new markets as well as new technologies with our best in class brands”.

Many land casino operators are against regulating online gambling in the US as this allows them to avoid competition; however, Harrah has recently changed its attitude. This is probably because it requires far less money to start an online business than try and build a new resort and also Harrah has the advantage of the powerful World Series of Poker brand to wield.

Harrah has said that the new division will begin investigating opportunities for online casino development in Europe. By beginning an online gaming operation now Harrah is preparing itself for possible entry into the US online gambling market if the Frank bill is passed and repeals the UIGEA.

Harrah is now the latest new and interesting casino brand to join the exclusive group of very professional casinos.
